Gilbert Hay (II), lord of Errol, constable (d.1333)

Biography
Gilbert was one of the earliest and most loyal supporters of Robert I, adhering to the king from March 1306. Was rewarded for his service with the office of constable of the realm by 16 March 1309. The constableship was briefly reclaimed by the Strathbogie family but, on the forfeiture of the Strathbogies in 1314, the office was granted to Gilbert and his heirs in perpetuity. Gilbert was employed as an envoy to England, acted as a testator to the so-called Declaration of Arbroath, and as a conservator of an Anglo-Scottish truce of 1323. He died in April 1333 and his office and estates seem to have passed to his grandson, Sir David Hay (d. 1346 at Neville’s Cross) and his descendants. https://doi-org.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/10.1093/ref:odnb/54228
