Edward [Balliol], king of Scots (d.1364)

Biography
Edward Balliol was the eldest son of John Balliol, king of Scots (c.1248x50-1314) and Isabel, daughter of John de Warenne, sixth earl of Surrey. He was probably born c.1281. After his father’s forced abdication in 1296 Edward was detained in England, however following John’s death in 1314 he was allowed to move to the family’s estates in France. The death of Robert I in 1329 encouraged Balliol to press his claims to the Scottish crown. He received support from the so-called ‘disinherited’ lords who had had lands and titles forfeited because of their opposition to Robert I. Balliol’s small invasion force achieved a victory over the lords fighting in the name of Robert I’s son, David II, at the battle of Dupplin Moor (11 August 1332). Balliol was thereafter crowned at Scone on 24 September 1332. Balliol was, however, expelled from the kingdom by pro-Bruce forces before the end of the year. In 1333 he returned north with the open backing of Edward III who defeated Balliol’s adversaries at Halidon Hill on 19 July 1333. In return for the English king’s support Balliol offered formal homage on 19 June 1334 and surrendered to him Lothian, and the shires of Berwick, Roxburgh, Selkirk, Peebles and Dumfries, and the three parts of Lothian to Edward III. Disunity amongst the ‘disinherited’ weakened Balliol’s regime and he was once more forced to retreat to the Anglo-Scottish border. A massive invasion by Edward III in the summer of 1335 brought many opponents back into Balliol allegiance, but the gains proved to be temporary. When Edward III shifted his attention to campaigning in France in 1337 Balliol’s position in Scotland declined rapidly and by 1339 he was an exile based in the north of England. Despite a brief comeback in the south of Scotland after the English defeat of David II at Neville’s Cross on 17 October 1346 Balliol’s fortunes did not improve and in 1356 he resigned to Edward III all rights he had to the crown and kingdom of Scotland. He received a substantial pension from Edward III and retired to Wheatley, near Doncaster, Yorkshire. He died in January 1364. Edward never married and died childless. https://doi-org.ezproxy.is.ed.ac.uk/10.1093/ref:odnb/1206
