Otto de Tonengo, papal legate (d.1250/1)

Biography
Ferguson, Medieval Papal Reps., 89-96: Otto was raised to the cardinalate in 1227, being cardinal-deacon of St Nicholas in Carcere Tulliano, and was appointed as legate de latere in England, Wales and Ireland in February 1237. He had previously been a papal nuncio, visiting England, Germany and Denmark. He was instructed in 1237 to help bring about peace between England and Scotland and in May he was also appointed legate in Scotland. He arrived in England in mid-July, and made plans for a meeting between the two kings which took place on 22-25 September at York and resulted in the 1237 Treaty of York. Afterwards, Otto went to Worcester and then held a council at London on 18-21 November. He finally came to Scotland in 1239, around 21 September according to the Chron. Melrose (86-87). By 19 October he was in Edinburgh, where he held a council at Holyrood Abbey and left Scotland in early November. _Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church_: Otto was also known as Oddone di Monferrato, Othon de Montferrat, Ottone Candido and Ottone da Tonengo. He was called 'Candido' and 'Bianco'. He was born in Lombardy, the son of Marquis Guglielmo di Monferrato. He was a master of arts and had studied mathematics. He was a canon of Ivrea and counsellor-general of its bishop from 1214. In 1224 he served as an ambassador of Bologna to obtain university statutes from Pope Honorius III. He was nuncio of the pope in 1225 and by 1227 he was a papal chaplain. In May 1244, Otto was appointed bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina. He died sometime in late 1250 or early 1251 at Lyon and was buried in the Dominican church there.
