Walter Gray, archbishop of York (d.1255)

Biography
Walter was the younger son of John de Gray of Rotherfield Greys (OXF) and his wife, Hawisia. His uncle, John de Gray, was bishop of Norwich (1200-14). His nephews, Henry and Walter de Gray, were canons of York, and another nephew, William de Langton of Rotherfields Greys, became the first dean of York (about 1260-1279), and archbishop-elect of York, though he was deprived of the see. He became King John's chancellor in October 1205, surrendering the seal while in Flanders from October to January 1213-14 and remained chancellor until October 1214. He was unsuccessful twice in elections to the see of Coventry during this time but in 1214 he became bishop of Worcester, being consecrated on 5 October 1214. In 1215 secured translation to the archbishopric of York. Gray acted as regent between May 1242 and September 1243 when Henry III was in Gascony. He died at Fulham on 1 May 1255 and was buried on 15 May at York. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/11566
