Description
Pope Nicholas IV writes to Matthew, bishop of Dunkeld, confirming his election, on the death of William, bishop of Dunkeld. Simon, dean, and the chapter of the same church empowered five of their body, namely, Matthew himself, then dean of Aberdeen, the said dean Simon, Gregory and William, archdeacons of St Andrews and Teviotdale, in Glasgow Cathedral, and Thomas of Preston, canon of Dunkeld, to make the election, which fell on Matthew, and, having been presented to the pope and examined by the bishop of Porto, 'Comitem', cardinal-deacon of SS Marcel and Peter, and Benedict, cardinal-deacon of St Nicholas in Carcere Tulliano, the election is confirmed. Concurrent letters to the dean and chapter, to the clergy, and to the people of the diocese, to vassals of the see, to the bishops of St Andrews and Glasgow and other prelates and guardians of the realm, and to Margaret, daughter of the king of Norway.
