- Inquest taken at Edinburgh on Wednesday, 13 July, regnal year 33, over the extent of the barony of Braid (MLO), which is in the wardship of the lord king, by these faithful jurors: Laurence of Cramond, Gilbert de Pistrina, Ralph de Loggetoun, Geoffrey of Farsley, John de Crakis, Thomas Waraund, Alexander son of the parson, John Bradeye, William Schelle, Alexander son of Matilda, Fynnymonse, and John Blakis, who said by their oath that Henry of Braid held the barony of Braid with its pertinents in chief of the lord king, namely, Bavelaw (MLO) and ‘Groittehill’ which the mother of the said Henry has as her third part in the name of dower (dotis). And the said Henry dowered ( dotavit ) the daughter of William Sinclair in free marriage with Henry her son and heir of two parts of Bavelaw on Easter in the regnal year 32, namely, for one year before his death. They also said that the said land in the time of peace when it was edificate and culte by all with mill and all other commodities was worth 40 marks and now, due to the destruction in war, the two parts of Braid and of ‘Groittehill’ in which the said Henry died vested and saised is valued this year at 8 marks, because nothing is built on it. They also said that second year if the mill is constructed and the land edificat and of men habitat, it will be worth 12 marks, and in the third year, 13 marks, and in the fourth year, 16 marks, and in the fifth and sixth years it will be worth 18 marks. They also said that the aforesaid land is held for the service of one knight of the lord king. They also said that Henry son of the aforesaid Henry is the nearest heir of the same. And his age is 16 years on the next feast of St Luke the Evangelist. And they said the lord king is able to confer the custody of the said two parts until the legitimate age of the true heir on whomever he wishes.
