Document 3/5/5 (St A. Lib., 208)

Description
Countess Ada to St Andrews Priory; has given and granted land in Crail (FIF) that Ralph of 'Aluerbas' inhabited.
Firm date
24 May 1153 X 2 April 1172
Dating Notes
This charter states that a Ralph of Morpeth held a toft in Crail. It is worth noting that Ralph de Merlay was lord of Morpeth, Northumberland, in 1138, and married Juliana, a daughter of Earl Gospatrick of Dunbar, and his grandson, Roger de Merlay II, married Ada, daughter of Earl Donnchad II of Fife, before 1188. (Hedley, _Northumberland Families_, I, 197-8). A witness to this charter, Robert of Newham, is also perhaps from Northumberland.
