a: Inquisition at Berwick?, on Saturday next after St Bartholomew’s day, 24th year [25 August 1296], before Sir Walter of Twynholm, keeper of the sheriffdom of Wigtown, by Sir John of Gelston, Sir Thomas of Torthorwald, Sir Henry Mandeville, Thomas Macculloch, Michael his brother, Ralph de Campania, Roland Ascolok, Hector his son, William Palmallet, Elias de Lehakis, Gilbert Hannay, Dougal son of Godric, and Fergus MacDowall, who find on oath that Lady Elena de la Zouche held in capite of the king the third part of the villa of Mauhinton (Craichlaw), in the county of Wigtown by service due in the county of Dumfries. It was worth to her 27 marks yearly. Alan de la Zouche is her next heir, and 24 years of age and more. b: Inquisition at Berwick, on Saturday next after St Bartholomew’s day, 24th year [25 August 1296], before Sir Osbert of Spaldington, warden and sheriff of Berwick, by Humphrey de Jardin, Bernard of Keith, John de Parco, William of Abernethy, Peter of Prenderguest, John of Paxton, William [Murray] of Drumsargard, knights, Master Thomas of Bunkle, John de Stoteyllington [Shitlington?], John Sinclair, Robert Muschamps, Hugh Gray, Alan of Trabrown, and Alan de Cohlan, who find that Lady Elena de la Zouche held in capite in the sheriffdom of Berwick the third part of the moiety of the villa and valley of Lauder, by a knight’s service. It was worth to her £11 13s. 3 ½ d., 5 pounds of wax, a third pound of pepper annually. Alan de la Zouche is next heir and 24 years of age and more. c: Inquisition at Berwick, on Sunday next after St Bartholomew’s day, 24th year [26 August 1296], before Hugh de Lowther, sheriff of Edinburgh, by Henry of Ormiston, Nicholas of Preston, William son of Geoffrey of Bolton, John Scott, Henry Ferur of Tranent, Waltheof of North Berwick, William of Harlaw, David of Pencaitland, Gilbert of Drem, William of Sydserff, Thomas of Straiton, and Jordan of Addinston, jurors, who find that Lady Elena de la Zouche held in capite in the bailliary of the sheriffdom of Edinburgh a chief messuage and three ploughgates of land in the villa of Tranent, worth yearly £19 14s. 10d.; in the colliery there of fixed rent, 46s. 8d. and in the mill 33s. 4d. In the land of Fauside, 11s. 1d. She held in the lordship of Niddry in capite 3 ploughgates with £14 16s. 5d. yearly, and in the tenement of Calder-Clere, 2 ploughgates, worth £6 13s. 4d. Her heir is Sir Alan de la Zouche, son of Sir Roger de la Zouche, who is 24 years of age and more. They append their seals. d: Inquisition at Berwick, on Sunday next after St Bartholomew’s day, 24th year [26 August 1296], before Robert de Joneby, sheriff of Dumfries, by Sir John of Gelston, Sir Donald son of Cane, knights; Gilbert de Southwick, Ralph de Campania, Adam of Colvend, Walter son of Richard of Twynholm, Thomas de Arbygland, Cuthbert Makgilwinni, Patrick McGilboytin, John de Bondeby, Michael of Kirkdale, and John de Monreith, who find on oath that Lady Elena de la Zouche held in capite in the sheriffdom of Dumfries the third part of the villa of Girthon, and of the villa of Senwick worth £34 yearly; the 6th part of Troqueer and Drumflat, worth £4; also in the villa of Kelton, a mark land and one pound of wax in all issues. Alan de la Zouche is next heir and 24 years of age and more. She owes 1 ½ knight’s service and the third of one half knight. e: Inquisition at Berwick, on Monday next after St Bartholomew’s day, 24th year [27 August 1296], by Robert Melville, Thomas Kerr, John Ramsay, Thomas Sibbald, William of Kinloch, Adam Ramsay, Malcolm Ramsay, Roderic de Admulti, William of Abercrombie, Adam de Valognes, Henry of Tarvit, Malcolm of Auchtermuchty, Robert of Orrock, who find on oath that Elena de la Zouche died seised in demesne in the county of Fife of the third part of the lands of Dysart FIF and Strathon worth yearly £7 6s. 8d. She held in capite. Also, the free service of Roger de Schazaury, and the third of half a mark of his fixed rent. Alan de la Zouche is her next heir and 24 years of age. He has done homage to the king for the above and his other lands in Scotland. Oliver de la Zouche does the third of a knight’s service for the same and for the land of Leuchars. f: Inquisition at Berwick, on Tuesday next after St Bartholomew’s day, 24th year [28 August 1296], before Reginald sheriff of Ayr, by Sir Bernard of Keith, knight, Hugh of Blair, Ralph of Eglinton, Robert de Pitcon, Adam of Home, Ralph Faireye, Robert de Boiville, Adam de la More, William Kerr, Walter of Lynn, William de la More, Niall of Dunlop, who find on oath that Lady Elena de la Zouche held in chief in Cunningham in the county of Ayr, the third of the moiety of Irvine by the third of a knight’s service worth £6 10s. 4 ½d. and 2s. 2 ½d. Sir Alan de la Zouche is next heir and 24 years of age. The sheriff and jurors append their seals.
