Description
W[illiam] and M[atthew], bishops of St Andrews and Dunkeld, John, earl of Buchan, James Stewart of Scotland, John de Soules, Ingram de Umfraville, and William de Balliol, knights, write to John Comyn, guardian of the realm of Scotland and the community of the realm, noting the peace made between the kings of France and England on Wednesday 22 May 1303 and that messengers of the king of France are going to England. In the peace made between the kings, the Scots were excluded. They pray that they should be of good heart. If the English king agrees to a truce, they should also agree. If he should refuse a truce, they should defend themselves and stay united. They also pray that the wife (‘sociam’) of Sir John de Soules be granted peaceful enjoyment of the estate provided for her when they left for France until they return, so that Sir John should not give up his efforts.
