Document 2/158/21 (Theiner, no. 398)
- Description
- Pope Clement V writes to William, bishop of Dunkeld, noting how the church of Dunkeld, subject immediately to the Roman church, has been without a pastor since the death of Matthew, bishop of Dunkeld, and how the chapter of the church called for an election by Thomas of Preston, Patrick of Strath and Matthew Caraldi, canons of the same church, in which William, then a canon of Dunkeld, was elected; but John, archbishop of Dublin, then canon of Dunkeld, opposed the election. The matter being brought before the pope and heard by James, cardinal-deacon of St George ad velum aureum, and John meanwhile promoted to Dublin, the election was confirmed and Berengarius bishop of Tusculum was appointed to consecrate William. Concurrent letters to the chapter of Dunkeld and the clergy of the diocese.
