Description
Edward [I], king of England, lord of Ireland, duke of Aquitaine, and lord-superior of the kingdom of Scotland addresses Brian son of Alan, governor of the castles of Forfar, Dundee, Jedburgh, and Roxburgh and states that whereas John de Balliol, lately in the king’s Parliament held at Berwick-upon-Tweed, came before him and petitioned that he should assign him the Kingdom of Scotland, and have possession of the Kingdom itself delivered up to him by the legal right of succession, as being nearest heir of Margaret, daughter of the King of Norway, princess of Scotland, and deceased grand-daughter of Alexander [III], the last king of Scotland; and having heard and considered the petition and the reasons urged on behalf of John de Balliol, as well as those of other candidates of the said kingdom, and having carefully examined the petitions and reasons, Edward has found that John de Balliol is the nearest heir of the said Margaret as regards the possession of the said kingdom of Scotland. The king has therefore delivered the kingdom of Scotland, and possession of the same, to John de Balliol, but reserves his own rights and those of his successors; and he commands Brian son of Alan to cause the possession of the said Castles of Forfar, Dundee, Jedburgh, and Roxburgh, with all their pertinents, together with everything else handed over to Brian by inventory, and in the same condition as when he received the castles into his custody, to be handed over without delay to John de Balliol or to his representatives bringing these letters.
