- John, king of Scots, notes that because he has understood and made legal the donation, endowment and concession of lord Alexander, late king of Scotland, his predecessor, through which Margaret, daughter of the noble man Guy, count of Flanders and marquis of Namur, late spouse of Alexander, his son, was provided with a dowry and by reason of the marriage and widow’s dowry he gave 1,300 marks sterling (a pure mark valued at 13s. 4d.) in the villa of Berwick at the feast of Blessed Peter ad vincula, receiving annually as long as she lives, and in addition, the manor of Linlithgow, in the territory of Lothian of the realm, with 200 marks pertaining to the said manor. King John thus wishes and grants that the said Margaret shall have and possess the said 1,300 marks and manor of Linlithgow for her life, according to the letters of Alexander, his predecessor, late king of Scotland.
