Description
Since Nicholas of Rutherford, knight, has come to the faith and will of Edward, king of England, etc., he promises on his own behalf and that of his heirs, upon punishment of body and property, and whatever else he can forfeit, that he shall support him, and shall serve him well and loyally against all mortal men, every time he is called upon or summoned by his lord, the king of England, or by his heirs, and that if he shall come to know of anything harmful to them, he shall do all in his power to obstruct it, and hall make them aware of it. In order to hold to and keep these promises, he pledges himself, his heirs, and all their goods; and he has furthermore sworn this upon the holy Gospels. As proof of this matter he has caused these letters patent to be written, sealed with his seal. Given at Montrose, 11 July, in the twenty-fourth year of the reign of the aforesaid King of England [1296].
