Document 3/14/27 (Melr. Lib., no. 351)

Description
Robert de Brus, earl of Carrick, states that since the abbot and convent should be, through the charters and muniments of his progenitors relating to the grange of Maybole and the land of Largs in the earldom of Carrick (AYR), freely infefted, i.e. – that they are responsible for no forinsec service, except common military service pertaining to the defence of the kingdom [which is] to be collected from the whole kingdom, and because Robert acted against the freedoms granted to them by his ancestors, i.e- he burdened them for his military service of Carrick, Robert now grants that no forinsec service or military service will be taken, or will be made to be taken, from the men of the monks, or within the peace of the said alms-lands in posterity, unless the common military service of the whole kingdom is being levied on behalf of the defense of the kingdom. Additionally, he firmly orders and inhibits lest anyone of his men compels the men of the monastery to come forth for any military service, except for the service of the whole kingdom.
