- Adam of Dowane, son of Daniel of Dowane, in the full court of Richard, abbot of Kelso, at Lesmahagow, has sold and, by rod and staff, returned, for a certain sum of money which they completely relinquished to him in his great necessity, all the land which he and his ancestors held at any time in the tenement of Dowane within the barony of Lesmahagow (LAN) to his lords, the abbot and convent of Kelso, which sum of money Adam considers fully disseminated. Adam states that money not counted, not delivered and not received is to be thoroughly and expressly renounced, and if he and his heirs or assignees have or are able to have rights or claim in the land of Dowane at any time, he expressly renounces by the present [charter] all those rights, and he quitclaims them to his lords, the abbot and convent of Kelso. Additionally, he wishes and grants that if any charter or instrument appears at any future time, it is to be disregarded, and he subjects himself and his heirs or assignees to the coercion and power of the bishop and officials of Glasgow, whomever they may be at the time, and agrees to pay a penalty for disregarding the agreement.
