Document 4/22/9 (Midl. Chrs., no. 51)

Description
In 1306 at Soutra, an agreement was made between the master and convent of Soutra on the one hand, and Matthew, son of the late William of Kinglass on the other, viz.: that the master and brothers granted and leased at ferme to Matthew and two of his heirs procreated from Mergreta, kinswoman of Lord William the archdeacon of Lothian, their whole land which they held in the tenement of Kinglass and of Philipston Ew (Kinneil parish, WLO), with all the pertinents and easements pertaining to the land, to be held and had just as the charters bring forward or testify. Matthew and his heirs are to annually render ten shillings at two times [of the year], viz.: half at Pentecost and the other half at the feast of St Martin in winter nearest following, without any exaction, custom or demand. And if it happens that the master of Soutra, or his attorneys at the house, come to Matthew and his heirs asking for, or complaining about, the ferme, Matthew and his heirs will manage to provide honest sustenance (i.e. room and board) until what time Matthew and his heirs may satisfy the ferme to them, without any opposition. The master and convent promise warrandice.
