Document 3/588/4 (Newb. Reg., no. 132)

Description
Philip (III) de Vermelles, lord of Romanno, has granted and by this present charter established to Newbattle Abbey all the donations and lands which they hold in the feu of Romanno (PEB) by the gift of his predecessors, in free, pure and perpetual alms. He also establishes the land which they hold in the feu of Romanno due to the agreement between them and the canons of Holyrood Abbey, which said canons held of his ancestors.
Firm date
1223 X circa 1255
Probable date
or 1267 × early 14th century
Dating Notes
Agreement between Newbattle and Holyrood (_Newb. Reg._, no. 127) × [t.a.q. based on attestation of John de Vaux. If John II de Vaux, then earlier range; if John III de Vaux, then later range]. Alexander of Straton may suggest a later date; potentially post-1286.
