- John of Landells, for the salvation of his soul and all his ancestors and successors, has granted and made firm by this his present charter to Melrose Abbey all those donations which Sir William of Landells, his late father, and his ancestors made to the monks in pure and perpetual alms of the lands of Hownam, ‘Brunecnolleflat’ and Raeshaw (ROX) with all their pertinents and bounds, as is fully contained in the charters of Sir William, his late father, and his ancestors, which the monks have relating to the lands. Additionally, John, for the salvation of himself and all his relatives gave, granted, by this his present charter established, relaxed and in perpetuity quitclaimed 20 shillings, in free, pure and perpetual alms, which the monks released for the land of Hownam to Richard of Rule by the allocation of Sir William of Landells, his late father.

- Nicholas of Rutherford appears between 1270 and late 1290s (_Glasgow Registrum_, i, no. 216; _Kelso Liber_, i, nos. 174, 305, 308, _Melrose Liber_, i, nos. 329, 331) and others also appear during this period. Hugh of Pearsby as sheriff of Roxburgh also suggests 1270s or 80s.
