Description
An agreement was made between Sir J[…], abbot of Kelso and Adam de Culenhat’ of Closeburn whereby the abbot granted and demitted at ferme all the fruits of greater and lesser teinds, oblations and obventions of the church of Closeburn (DMF) with the land of the church and all pertinents, for three years, beginning at Pentecost 1281. Adam promised formerly and bound himself by corporeal oath to pay and enumerate for the teinds 53½ marks for the three years. In addition, Adam shall serve the church honestly, and shall find sufficient fuel and straw and grass beddings for the abbot when he comes to that place, and shall maintain houses with a game preserve and enclosed park for the works of the abbot. And so that this is observed, Adam has found as guarantor, Adam of Boulton, burgess of Dumfries. The abbot, meanwhile, shall support the […] and other burdens of the church.
