Description
Roger Avenel son of Gervase Avenel has granted and by this his charter established to Melrose Abbey the donation of Robert Avenel his grandfather, which Gervase Avenel his father confirmed, namely of land in Eskdale (DMF), which his grandfather donated in perpetual alms and established by his charter, at the instance of the most pious King Malcolm, first, as well as the illustrious King William, namely Tomleuchar (DMF) and Watcarrick (DMF), in pure and free and perpetual alms, for the soul of the glorious King David, who donated the same land to his [grandfather] for his service, and for the souls of Earl Henry and King Malcolm and King William, and Alexander, son of the king of Scots, his lord, and others. He has granted, given and established, and by this his charter, enchartered (incartaui), by stated bounds, noting the land of Robert Bruce, in pure and perpetual alms, free and quit from all service, custom and secular exaction. It is known that his grandfather accepted 5 marks from the monks which [Robert], his wife and Roger's father had quitclaimed before his death, which marks he also quitclaims and gives them in alms. His lord, William, king of Scots, granted, gave and established by his charter these things.
