Description
An inquest was made at Dumbarton in the year 1259, on the Thursday after the feast of St Lucy the virgin, in the presence of Andrew the clerk, constituted as attorney of the justiciar, by letters of the king, and in the presence of Robert ‘de Colechon’ and other responsible men of Lennox, whose seals are appended to this, by these barons, namely Lesmahagow, Roberton, Wiston, Thankerton, Carmichael, Stonehouse, (East) Kilbride, and Dalziel, and by Michael son of Edolf, jurors, who said that Patrick father of Robert of ‘Corrok’ (Corra, LAN), with the consent of Robert, who was then underage, conferred upon Elena, spouse of the said Robert, a ploughgate of land called ‘Polnegulan’, which Richard the clerk of ‘Kelmenros’ now holds, to be held by the said Elena in her lifetime if she has no offspring, or if Robert when he came of age did not consent to the marriage. But Robert and Elena having had offspring, the ploughgate was given to Sybilla mother of the said Robert in dowry. At length the said Robert in a certain necessity, with consent of his mother and wife, sold the said ploughgate to the said R[ichard] the clerk, who holds it now. And because the jurors do not have their own seals, Robert ‘de Colechon’, Cathal mac Murchy, and Hugh and Andrew the clerks, have appended theirs, attesting that the inquest was justly conducted.
