Document 4/8/29 (Melr. Lib., no. 332)

Description
An agreement is formed between the master, prioress and convent of Eccles, plaintiffs, and the abbot and convent of Melrose, defendants, concerning the teinds of the hay of the land of Pittlesheugh (BWK) which Master William of Greenlaw granted to Melrose and of the sustenance of the animals there, and of the teinds of hay of the land which William of Alwinton gave to Melrose to the south of the territory of Hassington (in Eccles parish, BWK), to which the master and nuns demanded to be restored. Melrose Abbey were bound to the master and nuns, paying ½ mark St Mark’s day at Eccles each year under penalty of 5s. if the payment is more than eight days late. The master and nuns are permitted to seize the animals of the abbot and convent wherever they shall be found, and they may retain them until the principal debt is completely satisfied. And if it shall happen that the land is put to feuferme, they shall answer in full for the greater and lesser teinds of the same ferme and other rights of the church remaining with the church of Eccles. The abbot and convent shall be free from the payment of ½ mark during the time of the ferme. If it happens that the abbot and convent acquires any other lands or possessions within the parish of Eccles, they shall make full satisfaction of all the teinds to the church of Eccles. And for the observance of this, both parties bound themselves to the jurisdiction of the abbot of Kelso.
