Document 4/8/12 (Melr. Lib., no. 195)

Description
An agreement is formed between Melrose Abbey and Vaudey Abbey [Valle Dei, Lincs] concerning the land of ‘Keresban’ in Galloway (in Dalmellington parish, AYR), given to the monks of Vaudey by Thomas de Colville and confirmed by William, his son, in free and perpetual alms. The monks of Vaudey, perceiving that the land is of little use and dangerous, not only on account of ineffective discipline but also on account of ambushes of barbarous people, granted and surrender the land with all its liberties and pertinents as contained in the charter of T. and confirmation of W. to Melrose Abbey at perpetual ferme. The monks of Melrose shall discharge the land to the king of Scotland and pay yearly to the king 5 marks, half at Martinmas and half at Pentecost, in the name of the House of Vaudey, for all service, in addition to the yearly payment of 4 marks to Vaudey on the fair of St Botulph. The monks of Melrose shall be exempt from all services, exactions and demands by the king and the monks of Vaudey. The monks of Vaudey defend and will warrant the land and all forms of this agreement against all men. In order that this agreement is stable for ever, the abbots of Rievaulx and Fountains are willing to get surety at the insistence of both parties.
