Description
An agreement is formed between Jocelin, bishop of Glasgow and Roger de Valognes to settle the dispute about patronage of the church of [East] Kilbride (LAN) whereby Roger quitclaimed the patronage to the bishop and his successors in perpetuity with a ploughgate of land and common pasture and all other easements rightfully belonging to the parish of that church. He renounced what he claimed to have by right in it because it was recognised and proved in the king’s presence at Lanark by lawful witnesses that the patronage of the church of [East] Kilbride had anciently belonged and ought to belong to the church and bishop of Glasgow, and that Bishop John and his successors gave that church freely and without any opposition or reclamation. Bishop Jocelin granted that Roger have a chapel and his own chaplain in his castle of [East] Kilbride, the chaplain to receive the offerings of Roger, his staff and his guests, so that if anyone of his familia has draught animals or cattle or corn or anything else from which teinds ought to be levied within the parish of [East] Kilbride, the teinds should be paid to the mother church and all other ecclesiastical rights, except the offerings. Roger shall find necessities for the chaplain, so that neither the chaplain nor Roger shall demand anything for the maintenance of the chaplain from the mother church or from its parson.
