Document 4/33/12 (Melr. Lib., no. 281)

Description
Bishop Walter of Glasgow makes known that in the dispute between the monks of Melrose and Master Hugh of Potton, archdeacon of Glasgow, on behalf of the church of Hownam, concerning the teinds of Raeshaw', the following composition was made. The monks of Melrose shall pay to the church of Hownam and its rectors 20s. at the feast of St Martin, by which they will be free and immune from all tribulations and all troubles and exactions in the territory of Hownam by the marches contained in the charter of William, son of John, which the monks have concerning this land. This was made with the assent of Melrose Abbey and at the instance and petition of the said archdeacon, who held that church as persona.
