Document 4/32/88 (Melr. Lib., no. 317)

Description
Master Adam, perpetual vicar of Dumfries, notifies that since apostolic letters have been procured against the abbot and convent of Melrose concerning the teinds of Burntscarthgreen (DMF), by the abbot of Holywood and [Nicholas of Moffat], archdeacon of Teviotdale, which teinds are said to belong by common right to the church of Dumfries, the case was called before the said judges concerning the teinds, at Dumfries. Adam renounced, for himself and his successors, all action and benefice of right which he had or could have in those teinds and also other letters obtained from the holy see whether from an ordinary judge or a delegate. By the counsel of prudent men and skilled judges between the abbot and convent of Melrose and Adam himself, concerning the teinds of Burntscarthgreen, it was agreed amicably that, having considered when the abbot and convent and their predecessors had granted the villa of Burntscarthgreen at ferme, they had never received from the same more than 20 marks but many times much less. Hence, since the time of this composition, the teinds of the said villa have not valued above 10s., considering the usefulness of the church of Dumfries, the abbot and convent of Melrose, for all manner of teinds, both garbal and of animals’ food, they shall pay as much as 3 marks yearly at the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul at Melrose to the said Master A., and his successors, in the name of the church of Dumfries, and Adam quitclaims to the abbot and convent whatever by right or fact, in all manner of teinds of the villa of Burntscarthgreen belongs to the church of Dumfries.
