Document 4/34/7 (Kel. Lib., no. 229)
- Description
- Richard, rector of the church of Campsie and chancellor of Glasgow, before the official of Glasgow, between himself and the abbot and convent of Kelso concerning 10 marks yearly petitioned by the same abbot from the church of Campsie on account of a certain agreement made between Sir Walter, late bishop of Glasgow, and the chapter, and the said abbey; this was litigated a long time before the said official until eventually Richard, personally present before the official, confessed that the said annual rent of 10 marks would be paid, and he would bind himself to the tenor of the agreement without contradiction. Moreover, of the arrears of the said rent, it was ordained that he will pay 10 marks on the Purification of BVM, 1266, and 10 marks at the feast of Pentecost following, besides the annual rent of 5 marks owed at the said time, and 10 marks at feast of St Martin in hyeme following in the same manner, besides the annual rent of 5 marks owed at the same time. If it can be agreed at another time, because he holds a great sum of arrears, he promises to pay to the same, and make the same payment as he bound himself, without quibbling or judicial uproar. If it happens that he fails to pay the payment or the arrears at the stated times, he promises to pay a 100s. penalty to the fabric of the church of Glasgow. Expenses incurred by the same lawsuit, to the supplication of the king of Scots and of certain magnates up to 5 marks, are discharged by the grace of the abbot and convent, which 5 marks Richard agreed to pay at the feast of St Martin in hyeme 1267 under pain of the above annotated.
