- Pope Honorius III writes to the bishop of St Andrews in response to the petition sent by the prior and canons of St Andrews stating that it was too hurtful and burdensome for them to come frequently to the apostolic see for individual complaints because they were located in a remote region, and they were attacked with grave injuries by both bishops and by others. The pope was said to have given the complaint over to the abbot of Melrose and his colleagues, so that when requested by the prior and canons they should compel malefactors in the diocese of St Andrews by ecclesiastical censure, without appeal, to restore to the priory possessions unjustly detained and to make satisfaction for damages incurred and injuries inflicted. Recently, though a grave complaint was raised by the bishop that the prior and canons, by occasion of this letter, harassed and maliciously vexed the bishop with burdensome labours and expenses and thus contended against him continuously with litigation, and they disdain to be subject to him in anything. Pope Honorius therefore wishes to indulge that neither the bishop, nor his clerks or his steward can be further summoned into court by reason of that mandate.
