Document 2/139/21 (A-S Relations, no. 5)

Description
Pope Honorius III grants to Alexander, king of Scots, and his successors, following the example of his predecessors Popes Celestine and Innocent and considering that the Scottish church, in which there are the following dioceses, St Andrews, Dunblane, Glasgow, Dunkeld, Brechin, Aberdeen, Moray, Ross and Caithness, was subject immediately to the apostolic see, that no one except the pope or his legate a latere shall promulgate a sentence of interdict or excommunication. He also adds that it is unlawful for any persons who do not belong to that kingdom, unless specifically appointed by the pope for that end, to exercise the office of legate in the kingdom; he forbids any controversies which shall arise therein regarding any possessions in it to be brought to trial before judges outwith the kingdom, unless there is an appeal to Rome; he declares that all writs obtained or to be obtained against his indulgence shall cause no harm thereto, and establishes all the liberties and immunities granted and observed by the church of Rome to the king, kingdom and churches, saving the authority of the apostolic see.
