Document 2/139/75 (Dip. Norv., vii, no. 11)

Description
Pope Honorius III writes to the king of the Isles, noting that the king has, at the instigation of Pandolph, bishop of Norwich, at the time bishop-elect, and papal legate, generously donated and handed over to the pope the Isle of Man, which belongs to the king by hereditary right and for which the king is bound to no one in any manner of service, and receiving the same Isle from the Roman Church in fief, he has made an oath to the papacy for it. In recognition of the dominion of the church of Rome, the king has promised to pay yearly 12 marks, in England, at the monastery of Furness, on the feast of the Purification of BVM, and he has swore to observe this. The pope, therefore, accepts and ratifies this and takes the king and his lands into his protection.
