Document 2/137/30 (Med. Papal Reps., App. IV, no. 2)

Description
Pope Innocent III writes to the abbot of Dryburgh and the priors of Kelso and Holyrood, stating that the prior and convent of St Andrews have complained to him that although they have the right of presentation in the church of Meigle (PER), as is said to be contained in the instruments made accordingly, R[ichard], bishop of Dunkeld, intruded a certain boy not presented to them there, after an appeal had been made, to their prejudice and injury. Innocent thus commands the above to establish what is canonical, without appeal, causing what is decreed to be observed firmly by ecclesiastical censure, restoring to its correct state whatever shall appear to have been rashly attempted after a legitimate appeal was made. If the witnesses named shall have withdrawn out of favour, hatred or fear, they shall compel them by a similar stricture, without appeal, to provide testimony of the truth, and no letter obtained from the apostolic see shall prejudice truth and justice. If all of them cannot take part in carrying this out, let two of them do it.
