Document 2/133/8 (Glas. Reg., no. 65)
- Description
- Pope Urban III indulges to Brother Jocelin, bishop of Glasgow the right to install suitable persons in vacant churches within his diocese or subject to his law, some of which are on episcopal lands and some which are not. Anyone resisting that right should be struck by Jocelin with ecclesiastical censure. Appointments made by anyone to churches which are not vacant should be declared by the bishop through Urban’s authority to be illegal. Sons of priests, occupying their fathers’ churches as if by hereditary right, should be removed by Jocelin, unless for reasons of outstanding service and lengthy possession the bishop cares to tolerate someone. Jocelin should exercise canonical discipline against anyone who, having been forewarned, refuses due sinodalia and other duties.
