Description
Pope Alexander III writes to Osbert, prior of Paisley, and the brethren there, taking the priory into his protection; all the possessions and goods which they have or may acquire by papal permission, by the liberality of kings or the gifts of the faithful, may remain with the prior and his successors, including the place on which the church is situated and its pertinents; two ploughgates of measured land around the water of Cart next to the church; that land above the Cart from the woods by the marches perambulated by Walter, son of Alan, advocate of the church, and Alan, his son; that portion of land which is below the priory’s dormitory within the ditch; the church of Innerwick (ELO); the mill of that villa in addition to one mark which the same Walter gave at the mill to Ralph of Kent; the church of Legerwood (BWK) with pertinents; one ploughgate of land in Hassendean (ROX), which Walter the chaplain held by its right marches; the church of Cathcart (LAN) with pertinents; all the churches of Strathgryfe (RNF), with pertinents except the church of Inchinnan (RNF); that ploughgate of land which Grimketil held; two marks from ‘Threp’ (sic for Dripps, LAN?) which William held as a yearly rent and if William shall demit the land it will remain with the abbey in perpetual alms; all the teinds of the said Walter of Vasto; all the island next to the town of Renfrew (RNF) with the fishing between the island and Partick (LAN); one ploughgate of land next to the town of Renfrew; one full toft in Renfrew; half a mark from the ferme of Renfrew; one net for salmon; the mill of Renfrew; the land next to that mill, where certain of the monks had lived before; one ploughgate of land between the Cart and Gryfe; the church of Prestwick (AYR) with all the land which Donald, son of Ewein, designated to them between the land of Simon Lockhart and the land of Prestwick up to ‘Pulprestwic’, and following ‘Pulprestwic’ up to the sea and from the sea following the torrent stream between the land of Arnold and the land of Prestwick, up to the marches of Simon Lockhart; the church of the other Prestwick in the burgh; two chalders of salt from Callendar annually; the full teinds of Walter’s hunting, plus leather; hides of deer which Walter captures ‘in fermison’; 4s. from the mill of Paisley for the lighting of the church; they may grind at the mill free of multure; full teinds from the mill of Paisley and all mills which Walter has or could have; all easements of Walter’s forests of Paisley and pasture for prior’s animals and pigs; should Walter or his successors wish to have cattle within that forest, the prior and monks shall have sufficient forest for their animals, as contained in Walter’s charter; sake and soke, toll and team and infangthief, with the liberties and dignities granted to them. They are permitted to take in whatever clerics or laymen have fled from the secular world and have converted freely, and to retain them without any contradiction. None of the brothers, after making their profession, shall be permitted to depart the cloister without the permission of the prior. No one may intend to depart without the surety of common letters; he permits the right to celebrate divine office privately and quietly during a general interdict. The pope decrees that burial, for those who shall decide to be buried in that place, will be unimpeded, except for those excommunicated or under interdict, saving justice to the mother church; in addition, after the death of the prior, they may choose their successor. The pope directs that no man is permitted to disturb the church or carry away its possessions; saving to the bishop canonical justice and reverence and the authority of the apostolic see. Should any secular person attempt to go against this, after three warnings if he should not make amends, he may lost his honour and be liable to divine justice, and subject himself to retribution.
