Document 2/64/6 (Arb. Lib., no. 258)
- Description
- Abbot Ralph and convent of Arbroath notify that abbot and convent of monastery of St Edward of Balmerino were held to an annual payment of 40 marks for church of 'Fethmuref' (Barry, ANG), which Arbroath Abbey has demitted to Balmerino Abbey, by authority and consent of William, bishop of St Andrews, but that King Alexander [II], loving each monastery with a special affection and favour, one being burial place of his father, other of his mother, has agreed to free Balmerino Abbey from payment and has ordered that a payment of 40 marks be made from another suitable place, as in king's charter to Arbroath. Arbroath Abbey has thus absolved and quitclaimed payment in perpetuity to Balmerino Abbey, granting that they may hold said church of Barry without any exception. The abbot and his successors shall answer for all episcopal dues pertaining to church and serve church with a chaplain, which chaplain shall have one oxgang of land in same territory as in peace made between them when they demitted church at ferme to them, as perambulated by Sir Jocelin of Ballindard and Nicholas of Inverpeffer and many other men.
