Document 2/12/1 (SEA, i, no. 55)

Description
Gilla-Aldan, bishop-elect of Whithorn, to Archbishop Thurstan of York; notes that he knows from authentic writings of fathers and truthful testimony of old men that bishop of Whithorn of old ought to regard York as his mother and metropolitan and obey it in those things which pertain to God. He therefore promises due subjection to Thurstan and his successors and to observe canonical obedience in future.
Firm date
9 December 1128 X 25 January 1140
Probable date
prob. early, and pres. × 1137
Dating Notes
Mandate for Bishop Gilla-Aldan's consecration × resignation of Archbishop Thurstan; war broke out between David I and King Stephen of England in 1137, and the profession of obedience was presumably made before that (Oram, _Lordship of Galloway_, 171).
