Richard I, king of England (d.1199)

Biography
Richard (Richard the Lionheart) was the third son of Henry II (d. 1189) and Eleanor of Aquitaine (d. 1204). He was born on 8 September 1157 at Oxford. He was brother of Henry the Young King (d. 1183), Geoffrey (d. 1186) and John (d. 1216); his sisters were Matilda (d. 1189), Eleanor (b. 1161) and Joanne (d. 1199). In June 1172 he became duke of Aquitaine. He became king - and duke of Normandy - upon his father's death on 6 July 1189, and was crowned at Westminster on 3 September of that year. He married Berengaria of Navarre (d. 1230), daughter of Sancho VI, king of Navarre (d. 1194), though he had been previously betrothed to Alice, sister of Philip Augustus of France for decades; they had no children together. On 26 March 1199 while at Châlus-Chabrol, Richard was wounded in the shoulder, an injury which turned gangrenous. He named his brother, John, as his heir and died on 6 April. He was buried at Fontevrault, next to his father, and his heart was removed for burial in Rouen Cathedral. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/23498
