Aymer de Valence, bishop of Winchester (d.1260)

Biography
Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae 1066-1300, ii, 86: Aymer was consecrated on 16 May 1260 (30 May according to the ODNB) Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicanae 1066-1300, i, 68: Aymer occurs as canon, probably holding the prebend of Oxgate, where he held lands, on 31 March 1248. Aymer de Valence (or de Lusignan) was the half-brother of Henry III of England. He was the son of Hugues (X), count of La Marche, and his wife, Isabella of Angoulême, widow of King John. Aymer was born around 1228 in Poitou, probably at Valence, near Angoulême, and had three elder brothers, Guy, Geoffrey and William de Valence. He had been promised the lordship of Couhé in 1242 and in June 1246 was presented to the church of Tisbury in Wiltshire and by the following summer was residing in England with his brothers. Other benefices which he received included Wearmouth and Chester-le-Street in the diocese of Durham, Kirkham (Lancashire), Blakeney (Norfolk), Deddington (Oxfordshire) and St Helen (Abingdon) and the prebends of Holme (York Minster) and Oxgate (St Paul’s, London). Aymer had also received pensions of 10 marks yearly from Crowland and St Albans abbeys. From July 1247 to at least September 1248 he was studying at Oxford under Master Vincent, a canon and future archbishop of Tours. He was back in Poitou for a while but on 4 November 1250 he was elected bishop of Winchester. Though the election was confirmed by the pope on 14 January 1251, Aymer was not consecrated until 30 May 1260. Much of the years 1257 and 1258 were spent outside of England, in Poitou and elsewhere in France. On 14 July 1258, he left England in exile, having lost his see, and went to the papal court where he was received more favourably and consecrated as bishop, though the monks of Winchester had already elected a replacement. Aymer died at the abbey of Ste Geneviève in Paris on 4 December 1260. His heart was buried at Winchester Cathedral on 20 March 1262. He had a niece, Alice, who was married to Gilbert de Clare (d.1295), son of the earl of Gloucester. http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/941
