Kelly, Oxford Dictionary of Popes, 200-01: John was born Pedro JuliĆ£o, or Peter of Spain, in Lisbon between 1210 and 1220. His father was a doctor. John studied in Paris and taught medicine at the University of Siena. He was dean of Lisbon and archdeacon of Braga. He was physician to Gregory X, who promoted him, in the spring of 1273, to the archbishopric of Braga and shortly afterwards, as cardinal-bishop of Tusculum. He was elected pope in September 1276 and was crowned on 20 September. On 14 May 1277, he was in the newly constructed papal palace at Viterbo when it collapsed. He died later, on 20 May, from his injuries and is buried in the Duomo at Viterbo.
