David Lindsay (II), son of David (I), lord of Luffness (d.1241)

Biography
In 1222, King Alexander II paid King Henry III £200 for the wardship and marriage of David (II) and his brothers for their English inheritance (CDS, i, nos. 822, 823, 261) David inherited the lordship of Crawford Lindsay from his father: David (II) gave lands in Crawford to Newbattle Abbey (3/350/14, 3/350/15) and renewed the gifts of his grandfather there (3/350/16). David had lands in STL: David gave Newbattle Abbey lands in the Carse of Stirling, which King William gave his grandfather William (II) (3/350/17). David was lord of Luffness (ELO): David gave Newbattle Abbey freedom from toll in the port of Luffness (3/350/18). Most of David’s charters call him ‘son of David of Lindsey’. David refers to William (II) as his grandfather (3/350/16). David refers to Walter of Lindsey (IV) as his brother (3/350/14). David refers to his mother Margerie, founder of Elcho Priory (3/350/19). The charter says that King Alexander provided Margerie with the lands for building a monastery there, which might support the notion that she was a member of the royal family –perhaps illegitimate? David (II) was overseas in April 1230, along with a Thomas of Lindsey, who was in the company of Earl John of Huntingdon (CDS, i, no. 1089). David (II) died between 25 June 1240 and 16 May 1241, prob. × 15 Apr. 1241 (CDS i, nos. 1497, 1515, 1525, 1526, 1532). David (II) was married to a woman named Christina, who failed to show up in an English court in April 1241 to answer disputes over her dower with various people (CDS, i, nos. 1525, 1526). Christina was married to Sir Robert of Pinkney by May 1241 (CDS, i, nos. 1530, 1531). This seems like a much more likely origin for the Pinkney claim in the Great Cause, although it would make sense that they would deliberately conflate wives of David (II) with David (I), especially if Margerie really was a member of the royal family. Christina was almost certainly Christina Hose, who is mentioned around 1272 by her son Walter Lindsay, along with her sister Matilda as heir to Sir Walter Hose, lord of Craigie in Ayrshire (3/350/26). Members of the Lindsay family later held lands abutting Craigie, namely Symington and Barnweill.
