Robert Bruce V, lord of Annandale (d.1295)

Biography
Robert was the son of Robert (IV) de Brus (d.1226×33) and Isabel (d.1251), second daughter of David, earl of Huntingdon (d.1219). Robert succeeded as a minor, placing his birth around 1220. Upon his mother's death, he succeeded to her estates in Essex and Garioch (ABD), part of the Huntingdon inheritance. He served as sheriff of Cumberland in 1255 and again in 1283-85, and constable of Carlisle Castle in 1267-68. He took part in the Crusade of 1270 with Edward, future king of England, and Edward's brother, Edmund. Bruce was later one of the leading competitors of the crown after the death of Alexander III. Robert had married Isabel (d. in or after 1264), daughter of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Hertford and Gloucester, by whom he had two sons, Richard (d.1285/86) and Robert (d.1304). His second wife was Christina (d.1305), daughter of Sir William of Ireby, a Cumberland knight. Robert died at Lochmaben on 31 March 1295 and was buried on 17 April at Guisborough Priory. A.A.M.
