Ralph Malchael is recorded as having been killed (along with Richard, son of Baldwin, and Master Imer) 'by deceit of the Scots' on 23 September 1168 (Chron. Holyrood, 150-1). His surname is Norman French for 'bad whelp' (Ibid.)
